In September, media outlets across the country reported that Equifax, one of the nation's largest credit reporting firms, had been breached by criminals. The company stated that the breach may have exposed personal information, credit card numbers, social security numbers and other identifying information of as many as 209,000 individuals.
Equifax stated on its website that it will mail letters directly to consumers whose credit card numbers or dispute documents with personal information were impacted. Additionally, Equifax's website contains a quick search feature that allows individuals to type in their last name and last six digits of their social security number to help determine if their information may have been compromised.
