Updates to the Cruising Guide to Prince William Sound

If you have corrections, additions, or other items that you think should be included here, please send them to Jim or Nancy Lethcoe, e-mail: pwsbooks@cvinternet.net.

1. Correction: Page 127. col. 1. Hiking: "There is an easement for public access across Chugach Alaska Corporation (CAC) lands at the head of the Bay of Isles to the inner lagoon. The easement is marked."

We tried to be as accurate as possible in depicting land ownership. However, the information we used for this location was inaccurate. Letter from Rick Rogers, Vice President, Chugach Alaska Corporation. 9/26/2001. "These are Chugach Alaska Corporation Lands with no reserved public access."

Chugach Alaska Corporation lands are privately owned lands. Visitors need a permit from the Chugach Alaska Corporation to walk, hike, camp, etc. on Chugach Alaska Corporation Lands. Please contact the Chugach Alaska Corporation, 560 East 34th St. #300. Anchorage, AK 99503-4196. Phone: 907-563-8866. Fax: 907-563-8402.

2. Addition: pp. 107-108. Boaters have reported that at high tide when the spit is covered that the directions in the Cruising Guide for crossing the Unakwik moraine are confusing. Boaters should pass about 200 yards to the west of the islet closest to the center of Unakwik Inlet paying particular attention at higher stages of the tide that they have correctly identified this islet. Warning: at very high tides, this islet and all but the tip of a white marker on it may be underwater. Some boaters have attempted to pass between this islet and another to the east which also has a sign on it. The area between these two islets bares at lower stages of the tide. Here are the GPS readings travelling from south to north for the passage.

Entering moraine: 61°00.5", 147°33.46'

Leaving moraine: 61° 01.0', 147°33.46'.

Minimum depth is 40 ft. at low water.

3. Change: p. 118. It has been suggested that the words "grassy islet" better describe the "island" on the west side of East Finger Inlet. "Favor the western shore to the vicinity of the island ("grassy islet") which restricts the channel halfway to the head."
